HYDERABAD: Plans to set up a multi-level parking complex in the Old City as well as development of the area around Charminar, including the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project (CPP) and the proposed suspension bridge across the Musi seem to be moving into a high gear with a group of politicians and bureaucrats inspecting the sites on Thursday. Deputy chief minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali, three legislators of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) including MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi along with MA&UD secretary Arvind Kumar and GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy inspected a vacant plot of land under the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority jurisdiction for the multi-level parking project.
The Telangana government wants to develop the area around Charminar on the lines of the development around the iconic Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and the Golden Temple in Amritsar, said deputy CM Mohammed Mahmood Ali.
On the Metro Rail project, he said works will start in the Old City soon. “CM KCR has asked Metro Rail officials to carry out the survey from Aza Khana e Zehra via Kotla Ali Jah and Darwaza to Falaknuma,” he said.
They also inspected the CPP and the location where the proposed suspension bridge is to be built across the Musi to exclusively accommodate hawkers. Some hawkers near the monument were relocated to Charminar bus station recently and the authorities are trying to accommodate the others on nearby pavements. “Tenders will be called at the earliest for hawkers bridge as well as toilets and CCTV cameras to be installed. We have also inspected the area around Charminar for land acquisition but it will be done only after owner’s approval,” said a top Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) official, adding that the detailed project reports (DPRs) for the CPP and the Charminar area have been prepared.
The officials executing these projects have been instructed to preserve the unique heritage and culture of the place. GHMC officials confirmed that the Jula Khana Kaman, Laad Bazar, and Murgi Chowk will be developed preserving the Asaf Jahi culture. The Murgi Chowk area is proposed to be strengthened and an additional floor added even as the clock tower is being renovated.
